The Best Spots for Family Photos in Irvine and Orange County

Orange County is packed with stunning backdrops — coastal cliffs, golden meadows, lush trails, and manicured parks that photograph beautifully year-round. Whether you’re after soft golden light in the grass or dramatic ocean scenery, there’s a perfect spot for your family. Here are my favorite locations for family photo sessions in Orange County.

1. Jeffrey Open Space Trail — Irvine

This is my go-to location for Irvine mini sessions and family portraits. Jeffrey Open Space Trail offers wide open meadows, mature trees, and gorgeous tall grass that catches the light perfectly in the late afternoon. Read the complete Jeffrey Open Space Trail family photo guide for meeting, timing, outfit, and preparation details.

Best time to shoot: 1–2 hours before sunset for that warm, glowing light.

2. Laguna Beach

For families who want a coastal backdrop, Laguna Beach delivers drama and beauty in equal measure. The rocky shoreline, tide pools, and ocean views make for striking images. Keep in mind you’ll need a Professional Still Photo Permit ($100 for 2 hours, submitted 2 business days in advance), and wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet near the rocks.

Best time to shoot: golden hour for warm tones, or overcast mornings for soft, even light.

3. William R. Mason Regional Park — Irvine

Mason Regional Park is a hidden gem for portraits. The tree canopy creates beautiful dappled light, and the wide open grass areas are perfect for families with young kids who need space to roam. The park has a relaxed, natural feel that puts families at ease — which always leads to better photos.

Best time to shoot: late afternoon in fall and winter when the light filters through the trees.

4. Crystal Cove State Park — Newport Beach

Crystal Cove offers both beach and bluff options, giving you variety in a single location. The bluff trails have sweeping ocean views, while the beach areas feature tide pools and soft sand. It’s a bit more of a hike to get to the best spots, but the results are worth it.

Best time to shoot: 90 minutes before sunset during low tide.

5. Irvine Regional Park — Orange

Irvine Regional Park has tall oak trees, open fields, and a creek — all in one spot. The variety of backdrops means you can get several completely different looks in one session without moving your car. It’s also very kid-friendly, which helps keep little ones happy between shots.
