How to Prepare Your Kids for a Photo Session (So Everyone Actually Smiles)

If you’ve ever tried to get a toddler to look at a camera and smile on command, you already know how that goes. The secret isn’t perfection — it’s preparation. Here’s what actually works.

Start Talking About It a Few Days Before

Bring up the session casually a few days ahead of time — not the morning of. Keep the language fun and low-pressure. For younger kids, frame it as playing outside. The goal is for it to feel like something exciting, not an obligation.

Schedule Around Nap Time

Timing matters more than almost anything else. An overtired toddler is the fastest way to derail a session. Late afternoon slots work well for kids who still nap, since they’ve had time to wake up and reset. Older kids are usually fine with morning or golden hour sessions.

Bring Snacks

A light snack before the session helps with energy and mood. Avoid anything that stains — keep treats as a reward for after the session, not before. A little bribery goes a long way when you need one more genuine smile.

Let Them Warm Up Slowly

The first few minutes should be about exploring and playing, not posing. Don’t direct kids to “smile” or “look at the camera” right away — those commands almost always produce stiff, forced expressions. Let them get comfortable with the space and with me first. The natural shots come soon after.

Keep Energy Positive

Kids mirror adult emotions. If you’re stressed or tense, they feel it. Stay relaxed, laugh at the chaos, and trust that the session will come together — because it always does. If someone needs a break, we take one. There’s no rush.

What to Bring

  • A few favorite snacks (post-session rewards)
  • A comfort item or small toy for younger kids
  • An extra outfit for toddlers (spills happen)
  • Wipes

The Most Important Thing

The best family photos happen when everyone is relaxed and enjoying each other. Genuine laughter, a spontaneous hug, a kid making a ridiculous face — those are the images you’ll treasure far more than a perfectly posed shot where everyone is just standing there.
